Day 160: 10th Mar ‘22: All India Road Trip: Karnataka: Aihole – Badami – Pattadakal

Today, we drove from Bijapur towards Badami, and in between stopped over at various places. Starting with the magnificent Alamatti Dam over the Krishna river. Then we drove to Kudala Sangama, which is the confluence of Krishna and Malaprabha rivers.And at this very place is the Samadhi of the revered Saint Basavanna, founder of the Lingayat sect of Hinduism.
The next stops were the architectural marvels of the Chalukya Dynasty (6th to 12th century AD):
Aihole, also referred to as Aivalli, Ahivolal or Aryapura, is a historic site of ancient and medieval era Buddhist, Hindu and Jain monuments. Most of the surviving monuments at the site date from the 7th to 10th centuries.
Pattadakal, also called Paṭṭadakallu or Raktapura, is a complex of 7th and 8th century CE Hindu and Jain temples intricately built.
Badami, formerly known as Vatapi, is in the Bagalkot district of Karnataka. It was the regal capital of the Badami Chalukyas from CE 540 to 757. Known for The cave temples that are a complex of Hindu and Jain cave temples. The caves are important examples of Indian rock-cut architecture, especially Badami Chalukya architecture, and the earliest date from the 6th century.
An amazing day it had been as we went back more than a 1000 years back today, that we intend to continue as we spend next two days in Hampi before heading back to where we started from Bengaluru.
