Ella is a beautiful small backpacker-hub on the southern edge of Sri Lanka's Hill Country. It has become to go-to town in the hill country for tourists and as a result has a reasonably well-established tourism-orientated economy. For example, there is espresso coffee and fish and chips on offer, as well as lounge/backpacker -style bars aimed solely at the visitor. Namunukula is the name of a mountain range in Sri Lanka's province of Uva in the Southern region. Its main peak is 2,035 metres (6,676.5 ft) high. The name means "Nine Peaks".

I only went out for a walk, and finally concluded to stay out till sundown. For going out, I found, was really going in.

Experience

The climb to Ella Rock is reasonably steep and a good pair of walking shoes is essential. Neither trek would be a good idea in wet weather. One is the safety factor and the other fact is that thick fog would make it impossible to see anyway. If this comes to fruition we can provide some stout walking sticks that give the client some added stability/balance (especially coming down).

The closest town is Badulla. Meals from the local food stalls – a good mix of Muslim and other cuisine is highly recommended. Essentially what may be termed ‘street food’.

To either trek is about 45-55 minutes’ drive from Badulla. Some kms through Tea Plantations roads. They are gravel and rough and get bounced about!!. Access to the foot path entry point is best done in a 4×4 vehicle along those tea plantation roads.
There are two campsites atop Namunukula and there is one camp site at the top of Ella Rock. One would need to carry drinking water if one is to consider camping more than if one is merely going up for the day.

The most hazardous part is descending as the paths are covered with dry leaves and foot holds are quite tricky. The descending path from the top of Ella rock is quite tricky too and one needs to concentrate where one puts their feet. Tree roots and a loose rock can trip you up.

A reasonable level of fitness is all that is required. The mere fact that it is not ‘structured’ and ‘built up’ as a walking trail is half the attraction.
