Uttarakhand was carved out into a new state out of Uttar Pradesh in the year 2000. The name literally means north (uttara), land (khand). The state is mostly covered with mountainous terrains and forests. The nature is bountiful in Uttarakhand with high-altitude snow capped peaks, glaciers and rivers, dense forests with diverse flora and fauna. Coupled this with the rich local culture and the sacred pilgrimage centres makes Uttarakhand a very attractive destination for different types of travelers.

CHILL IN THE HILL STATIONS:
Uttarakhand has many picturesque hill stations where one could just go and spend days and even months there. Some of the popular ones are as follows:
Dehradun and Mussoorie:
Dehradun is the capital of Uttarakhand and is the gateway to many of the popular and beautiful destinations. One such place is Mussoorie. Popularly called the ‘Queen of the Hills’, Mussoorie is one of the popular hill stations in India. Developed during the days of the British Raj, there is a significant colonial legacy that adds to the charm of this beautiful hill station. Amazing weekend getaway.
Best Time To Visit: Throughout the year.
Things To Do: Visit Rajaji National Park, Lakes, Kempty Falls, Benog Hill & Jwalaji Temple. Monastery, Resorts and Forest research institute in Dehradun. Walk on the Mall Road in Mussoorie.
How To Get There: Mussoorie is one hour away (34 km) by road from Dehradun. The nearest railway station and airport is in Dehradun.

NAINITAL AND RANIKHET
What Dehradun and Mussoorie are in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, Nainital and Ranikhet are that in the Kumaon region, that is, beautiful and popular hill stations. Located by the scenic Naini Lake, from where the name of the hill station comes, and surrounded by the majestic mountains, the views and vistas are just breathtaking. And a few kilometres away lies Ranikhet, which is just perfect for it temples and its trekking trails.
Best Time To Visit: Throughout the year.
Things To Do: Visit the temples in Ranikhet and hike on the beautiful trails in the surrounding forest. Visit the Nainital Zoo and take a stroll around the Naini Lake.
How To Get There: Nainital is well connected by road. The nearest airport is Pantnagar 70 km away. The nearest railway station is located at a distance of 34 km at Kathgodham. It takes about 7 hours from Delhi to reach Nainital.

LANDSDOWNE
This cantonment town of Lansdowne was founded by the Viceroy of India, during the days of the raj. The hill station is known for its serene and quiet atmosphere. It is mainly a picnic destination for those who wish to have a relaxed and peaceful time in the hills.

How To Get There: Well connected by road. The nearest railway station is Kotdwar 39 km away.

GO OFFBEAT:
Following are some of the offbeat hill stations that are not so crowded and perfect for solo traveling and hiking.

DHANAULTI
Around 60 km away from the popular hill station of Mussoorie is this serene town of Dhanaulti. Though not as big and bustling as Mussoorie, it is the perfect place for a quiet and relaxed getaway amidst the mountains and crisp ambience.
Best Time To Visit: April to June, October-November.
How To Get There: Well connected by road, around 60 km from Mussoorie. The nearest railway station and airport is in Dehradun.

KANATAL
A picturesque village in Mussoorie, Kanatal is located on the Mussoorie-Chamba road. Away from the hustle and bustle of a big hill station like Mussoorie, this is just a perfect getaway. The village has some amazing views of the Shivalik mountain range and the dense pine forest.
Best Time To Visit: April to June, October-November.
How To Get There: Well connected by road, around 75 km from Dehradun. The nearest railway station and airport is in Dehradun.

ALMORA
An offbeat place indeed with some amazing weather and views throughout the year.
Best Time To Visit: All through the year.
How To Get There: Well connected by road. The nearest railway station is Kathgodam 90 km away and the airport is in Pantnagar 90 km away.

BINSAR
The entire village of Binsar is located in the wildlife sanctuary with some amazing views of Nanda Devi, Nanda Kot, Kedarnath and Chaukhamba. It is highly recommended to stay in the local homestays here and in the region and experience the local way of living.

MUNSIYARI
The quaint village of Munsiyari is in the Kumaon region and is the hub of many trekking routes. Apart from treks the place is popular amidst motor biking groups.

How To Get There: Well connected by road. The nearest railway station is Kathgodam 278 km away and the airport is in Pantnagar 249 km away.

KAUSANI
Kausani is a beautiful hill station in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. With views of peaks such as Panchuli, Trishul and Nanda Devi and one of the most stunning sunsets, Kausani is a sought after destination for those looking for a peaceful and relaxed time in the mountains. The place is also ideal for trekkers with some beautiful trails.

How To Get There: Well connected by road. The nearest railway station is Kathgodam 132 km away and the airport is in Pantnagar 162 km away.

The mountainous terrain of Uttarakhand with abundant natural beauty is a delight for hikers and trekkers. SKIING & ADVENTURE SPORTS:
Uttarakhand with its majestic mountain terrain, the forests and the wild rivers is a mecca for adventure sports. Following are some of the options in the respective places:

SKIING IN AULI
Auli is a much sought after skiing destination in Uttarakhand surrounded by some breathtaking mountain views. Located near the holy shrine of Badrinath, the snowy slopes in the winter are just perfect for skiing and snowboarding.

TREKKING, CYCLING AND RAPPELLING IN MUKTESHWAR:
Mukteshwar is a beautiful hill town in the Kumaon region. With some mesmerizing views of the peaks such as Trishul, Chaukhamba, Nanda Devi among others. Mukteshwar is blessed with some amazing trails for trekking, and is a popular spot for cycling in the beautiful through the scenic forest roads and villages. Rock climbing and rappelling are popular here as well.

ADVENTURE SPORTS IN RISHIKESH:
Rishikesh is a multi faceted town with temples and religion, yoga and spirituality, music and the Beatles, and more. But Rishikesh is synonymous with adventure sports not only in Uttarakhand, but also in whole of India. One of the best places for whitewater river rafting, the place is also popular for bungee jumping, giant swing, flying fox and more.

DISCOVER THE WILD:

JIM CORBETT NATIONAL PARK
Uttarakhand for a long time was the home of the legendary hunter and conservationist Jim Corbett. And it is befitting that the one of the largest and densest national parks be name after him. The National Park has some 600 species of birds, and equal no. of animals and around 488 different species of plants. The tiger is of course the most popular of them all. At the edge of the park is the old residence of Jim Corbett, which is now converted into a museum. It is highly recommended to visit the same.
Best Time To Visit: Throughout the year except for the Monsoon months (June to September).
How To Get There: Well connected by road. The nearest railway station is in Ramnagar and the nearest airport is the Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun.

RAJAJI NATIONAL PARK
Adjacent to Dehradun is this dense National Park with a rich diversity of flora and fauna. With a sizable elephant population it is highly recommended to go for a safari here as well.
Best Time To Visit: Throughout the year except for the Monsoon months (June to September).
How To Get There: Well connected by road. Adjacent to Dehradun.

GO MOUNTAIN CLIMBING:
Uttarakhand is a haven for trekkers and high-altitude climbers. With many peaks easy to challenging ones in the state, during the season (Spring or Autumn), there are climbing expeditions attempting to summit. There are skilled mountaineers and guides in the state that we work with to form expedition teams.
Some of the itineraries in the website and based on request we would organize an expedition for a peak not mentioned here.

EXPERIENCE THE SPIRITUAL: CHARDHAM
Uttarakhand is often referred to as ‘Devbhoomi’ or the ‘land of the gods’. It is the home to the most sacred pilgrimage places for the Hindus, Chardham or the ‘four abodes’ as defined by Adi Shankaracharya. It is believed that to achieve Moksha (or salvation) one should visit these four places – Yamunotri (origin of River Yamuna), Gangotri (orgin of river Bhagirathi and Ganga), Kedarnath and Badrinath.
Year-on-year hundreds of thousand of pilgrims head to these four destinations.
Further, the following are considered sacred and visited along with the Chardhams.
Gaumukh – The glacier in the shape of a cow’s mouth and hence the name. This is the origin of River Bhagirathi that eventually forms the might River Ganges.
Devprayag – The confluence of River Bhagirathi and River Alaknanda to form River Ganges.
Rudraprayag – The confluence of River Alaknanda and River Mandakini.
